Hola, Hello, Oi!

Hello, I’m Mileyca Oporta, but you can call me Mile!

I’m an Electronics Engineer with a deep passion for the aerospace industry, and I’m always striving to become a leader in this exciting field. Alongside my professional work, I’m also a proud mother to a beautiful daughter, and I believe in leading by example—showing the next generation the importance of balance, hard work, and pursuing their dreams.

Based in Costa Rica, I’ve spent the last decade working in transnational companies, most recently with National Instruments (NI), which is now part of the Emerson Business Unit. My expertise in engineering and customer success, particularly in aerospace, has allowed me to engage in innovative projects that push the boundaries of technology. I’ve had the privilege of being involved in transformative initiatives, including organizing major STEM volunteer activities and space exploration working with top aerospace companies, and developing programs such as Yuri's Night and World Space Week in Costa Rica.

As a trilingual professional and passionate public speaker, I am committed to using my platform and skills to advocate for STEM, especially for underrepresented youth. I am deeply involved in various initiatives aimed at promoting STEM education, and inspiring young people, particularly girls, to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

In addition to my work in STEM advocacy, I’m also a strong advocate for women in STEM, having collaborated with numerous nonprofit organizations to inspire and empower young women to pursue STEM disciplines. I actively support mentorship programs, volunteer initiatives, and events that promote gender diversity and inclusion within the scientific community.

Explore my website to learn more about the projects I’m working on, and the impact we can make together, and feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or ideas to collaborate. Let’s work together to create a future where everyone, especially young girls, has the opportunity to thrive in STEM!

My Story

I am Mileyca Oporta, a second-generation immigrant, born on October 15, 1993. I grew up in a humble home alongside my parents and siblings in a neighborhood in San Antonio de Escazú, San José, Costa Rica.

During my school years, I was seen as an average and rather shy student. However, in first grade, I found inspiration in Franklin Chang-Díaz, which sparked my dream of being involved in the world of science. I fondly remember drawing pictures titled "When I grow up, I want to be an astronaut" and working on a solar system project in third grade—moments that ignited my passion for space.

Over time, those childhood dreams were set aside. Becoming a young mother led me to prioritize other responsibilities, and at the age of 20, I began my professional journey as a back-office assistant at National Instruments. It was there that I discovered engineering as a career, which motivated me to pursue a degree in Electronics Engineering.

At the same time, I reconnected with my passion for volunteering and corporate social impact. Aligned with the company’s mission, I collaborated on and led national initiatives such as the FIRST LEGO League robotics competitions, contributing to STEM education for minorities and socioeconomically at-risk populations. This experience not only helped me find my life’s purpose but also allowed me to develop skills such as public speaking.

As a full-time student and worker, I faced the challenges of single parenting while advancing professionally. I grew in the customer service area, eventually becoming an Account Operations Manager for the aerospace business unit. In this role, I successfully managed international relationships with cutting-edge technology accounts such as NASA, SpaceX, and Blue Origin.

In 2022, I joined the board of directors of SWE - Society of Women Engineers, Costa Rica chapter, and in 2023, I became a Radio Frequency student within the Descubre Robótica fraternity.

Today, I am a graduate in Electronics Engineering, trilingual, an NI Software Sales Engineer at Emerson, and the President of the Society of Women Engineers Costa Rica. I also actively contribute to space education by organizing national events such as Yuri's Night and World Space Week, bringing my passion for science and leadership to inspire new generations.

Now, more than ever, I am committed to inspiring future generations to achieve their dreams, no matter the challenges they face. I firmly believe that education, perseverance, and teamwork are powerful tools to transform lives. My mission is to continue paving the way in engineering, space, and technology, proving that there are no limits for those who dare to dream big.
